Stewardship and Education

Ideal for you if:

  • You already have a native garden, and you want to learn how to manage it appropriately.

  • You already have a native garden and know your stuff, thank you; you just need a steward who understands ecological practices.

What is stewardship? It’s what we should be calling maintenance. A dynamic plant community should not be “maintained.” It is not a static entity in your yard, like a sculpture. Stewardship means noticing and wondering about the exciting changes that your plants make as they take turns competing with and supporting each other. It means accepting that nature is an ever-changing beast that will not bend to our human-centric desires.

Standalone stewardship visits are on an as-needed basis, so you’ll call in to schedule ahead of time, or sign up for a regular appointment. During a stewardship visit, we can:

  • troubleshoot issues in the planting and brainstorm solutions

  • address weed pressure

  • edit out plants that are multiplying faster than their neighbors

  • prune plants to control height and flopping

  • collect and spread seeds

  • scythe or mow to provide a new start
